The University of Southern Mississippi’s Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will perform a free season preview concert Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. near the Powerhouse Restaurant. Dr. Denise von Herrmann, dean of the College of Arts and Letters, will be in attendance at this event to make a major announcement about a special performance the band will give in 2010.
Audiences will get a sneak preview of musical highlights for the upcoming football season at the concert, which will feature the Sound of Golden Eagle Spirit, including traditional Southern Miss classics such as “Pride Fanfare,” “Southern Miss To The Top!” and “Are You From Dixie?”
The award-winning Pride Marching Band enjoys a reputation as one of the finest bands in the South. With a membership of 260 students, the band remains steadfast in its mission of preserving a long history of musical excellence on and off the football field.
“The people can expect a bigger and better Pride than they’ve seen in quite a while,” said Mohamad Schuman, director of The Pride. Band membership has increased by 40 members over the past year. “With increased enrollment, there’s a whole new level of energy and excitement within our performances.”
At the concert, The Pride will showcase high-energy, alternative rock selections from their first show of the season, Rockin’ the Rock. These selections include “The Pretender” by The Foo Fighters, “Train, Train” by Blackfoot and “The Hand That Feeds” by Nine Inch Nails.
“Southern Miss fans will enjoy our tunes,” said Kevin Shira, a junior music education major from Stafford, Va. One of The Pride’s three drum majors, he hopes to see many supporters of the band in attendance to hear the special announcement.
“This announcement will be huge for everyone at the university, because The Pride represents everyone on campus,” he said.
Band camp is now in session under the direction of Schuman and assistant director Jamie Standland. For more information on The Pride preview concert, visit http://www.usm.edu/arts.
