Michael Ibos, a junior marketing major from Kenner, La., was named the 2010 University of Southern Mississippi Student Employee of the Year in a ceremony held April 15 at the Thad Cochran Center.

Ibos began his employment in the Union Complex in 2007 and within one month was promoted to facility manager. As a manger he is responsible for opening and closing the Union Complex, meeting with and assisting customers, leading a crew of his peers, as well as various other tasks which come with helping manage a 270,000-square-foot facility.

“Even as a freshman Michael was able to take this responsibility,” said Megan Wilkinson, operations manager for the Union Complex. “He is a leader among his peers who will put more heart into his work than any other student involved.”

And that was never more evident than during a recent event in one of the Thad Cochran Center ballrooms. Ibos sprang into action upon realizing that one of the patrons appeared to be having a heart attack.

“When I arrived Michael was kneeling over the man and applying the pads of our Automated External Defibrillator (AED),” said Wilkinson. “Had it been any other student, I would have pushed him aside and taken over. However, because it was Michael, I stood behind him and watched him as he brought a man back to life.”
