A Hattiesburg businessman is using his green thumb to help The University of Southern Mississippi get spruced up for its 100th birthday and historic spring graduation ceremony.

Fred Fisher, a local landscape designer and consultant, helped the university beautify parts of the Hattiesburg campus this spring in conjunction with its Centennial Celebration, including donations of bedding plants, shrubbery, trees and weeks of labor by his staff.

He has also helped arrange for the use of trees and shrubbery for Saturday’s Centennial Celebration Commencement, set for 9 a.m. at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The event is a unified graduation ceremony for students from all of Southern Miss’s campuses and teaching sites.

“I’ve always believed in giving back to my community,” said Fisher, who is a previous member of the university’s Beautification Committee. In his youth he helped his father James Fisher, also a landscape designer and plant nursery owner, with several landscape projects on the Southern Miss campus in the 1950s and 1960s.

Fisher has also been a member of several area organizations and served on boards of directors for the Hattiesburg Boys and Girls Club, the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Hattiesburg Rotary Club. He is retired from the U.S. military with more than 28 years of service.

“We’re grateful to Fred for his generosity in helping us enhance the beauty of our campus during this milestone anniversary, especially at a time when we face budget challenges,” said Southern Miss Associate Provost Dr. Cynthia Easterling. “Without the generosity of supporters like him, many of the Centennial initiatives we have undertaken would not have been possible.”
