University of Southern Mississippi senior Jake Godard has been awarded the 2010 Turner Heggeman Memorial Scholarship by the Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama/Northwest Florida chapter of the Society of Industrial and Officer REALTORS (SIOR).
Godard, a finance and real estate major from Brookhaven, will receive a $2,000 scholarship from the society that he plans to use in helping reduce student loan debt.
“This news could not come at a better time for me,” said Godard. “I’ve certainly worked hard here at Southern Miss over the past year and feel honored to be recognized by such an important organization.”
SIOR, founded in 1941, has more than 3,100 members in 480 cities in 20 countries. The SIOR Foundation’s mission is to promote and support initiatives that expand, educate and enrich the commercial real estate community.
Dr. Frank Laatsch, chair of the Department of Finance, Real Estate and Business Law at Southern Miss, said the scholarship could not have been awarded to a more deserving student.
“Jake is in my financial institutions and markets class this semester and is a very diligent and able student,” said Laatsch. “I know he has an exciting and successful future ahead of him.”
Godard’s immediate future includes graduation in May followed by an employment opportunity with Medley & Brown LLC, a financial consulting firm in Ridgeland, Miss.
“I feel so lucky to already have a job lined up,” said Godard. “I can’t wait to get going and start putting my degree to good use.”Jake Godard
