The University of Southern Mississippi Phlebotomy Program recently received approval by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences for being incompliance with Standards of Approved Educational Programs for the Phlebotomist.

The Southern Miss Phlebotomy Program is the only NAACLS approved one in Mississippi. The program provides phlebotomy students with didactic and practical experience and consists of two courses, Phlebotomy I and Phlebotomy II Practicum.
The first course is taught online and includes didactic materials regarding phlebotomy. The second course is a clinical course that allows the student to gain experience in the practice of phlebotomy. Clinical affiliates include Wesley Medical Center, who partially funded the program, Hattiesburg Clinic and Covington Hospital.

Students who are accepted and enrolled in the phlebotomy program must meet the essential function requirements of the academic program and the profession. Essential functions are the nonacademic standards that a student must be able to master to participate successfully in the phlebotomy program and become employable. These areas are visual and observation, motor and mobility, communication, intellectual and behavioral skills for medical technology.

The Phlebotomy Program at Southern Miss is offered for credit and noncredit. For more information, contact the Department of Medical Technology at 601.266.4908, or go online at http://www.usm.edu/medtech to view the brochure.
