The daughter of international school teachers, University of Southern Mississippi senior Jennifer Lamb has spent enough time around various ecosystems to develop an affinity for biology.

Lamb, a Brandon, Miss., native, is scheduled to complete her undergraduate work this semester and begin pursuit of a master’s degree in the fall. Her ultimate goal is to obtain a doctorate in environmental ecology.

“My experiences growing up overseas are what first attracted me to a career in environmental biology,” said Lamb. “I have lived in five different countries and visited more than 20 others. There were countless opportunities to explore different ecosystems and I quickly felt empathy for, and became insatiably curious about, the amazing biodiversity that surrounded me.”

Lamb’s academic prowess has resulted in a coveted Morris K. Udall Scholarship and National Science Foundation honorable mention. She has also been selected to the Southern Miss Hall of Fame.

“I am honored to be included in the Hall of Fame. I have thoroughly enjoyed my work and the time I have spent at USM,” said Lamb. “To have the university recognize my efforts in this way is like icing on the cake.”

Upon graduation this month, Lamb will set her sights on post-graduate work which begins with pursuit of a master’s degree at Southern Miss. Her long-range goals include obtaining a doctorate degree and forging a career in ecology.

“After earning my doctoral degree, I will likely complete a post-graduate program and will eventually apply to work as a professor at a four-year university,” she said. “Throughout this process, I will study the ecology of reptiles and amphibians and be continuously involved in their conservation.”
