LONG BEACH, Miss. -- What better way to graduate from a university than to look off into the distance at the breath-taking scene of the Gulf of Mexico?

That's exactly what graduates of The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast have to look forward to, as they participate in spring commencement exercises May 15 at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

"We are proud of our lovely campus and its location on the Mississippi Sound," said Dr. Jay Grimes, provost of Southern Miss Gulf Coast. "The graduation ceremony last spring was spectacular and could have easily been a Hollywood set."

Of 421 total 2004 Southern Miss Gulf Coast graduates, 182 are expected to participate in the ceremony. Of the participants, 160 are scheduled to receive undergraduate degrees, while 15 will receive master's degrees and seven will receive doctoral degrees.

A Gulfport businessman and civic leader will be the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony. Billy Hewes, a veteran real estate executive, insurance agent and current Ward 7 city councilman for the city of Gulfport, will address the graduates at the 9 a.m. ceremony.
