BILOXI -- The University of Southern Mississippi's Scott Aquarium will host two free residential camps here this summer for students from selected schools. The camps are for eighth-grade students who are scheduled to enter ninth grade at GEAR UP Mississippi schools in the fall. More than 50 school districts in Mississippi are designated as GEAR UP schools. The program provides a variety of services to promote students' preparation for college and is funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Education through a collaboration of Mississippi institutions, agencies and organizations. Camp activities and field trips are designed to spark students' interest in marine science careers and to acquaint them with college scholarship opportunities and application processes. The camps are June 6-12 for females and June 27-July 3 for males. Lodging, food, field trips and other camp expenses are provided. Travel from home to camp and back will be the responsibility of the participants or their schools. For more information, contact Chris Snyder at (228) 374-5550 or Scott Aquarium is part of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, a unit of the Southern Miss College of Science and Technology.
