SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOPS SET AT SOUTHERN MISS GULF COAST

LONG BEACH --The University of Southern Mississippi's Small Business Development Center will host six workshops next month.

• The workshop "How to Start a Business in Biloxi" will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon, May 4, at the Biloxi Department of Community Development, 676 Martin Luther King Blvd., Biloxi. This workshop will cover specific requirements for a person wanting to open a business in Biloxi. Topics to be covered include: licensing, home-based businesses, zoning, permits, signage, insurance and legal issues. The fee is $25 per person.

• The workshop "Be Your Own Boss" will be offered from 6-8:30 p.m., May 4, at the Gulf Coast Business Technology Center, 1636 Popps Ferry Rd., Biloxi. General small business start-up information will be covered, such as licensing, zoning, business planning and financing. A representative from the Internal Revenue Service will cover forms of business ownership, tax forms, and other topics. The fee is $25.

• The workshop "Adobe Photodeluxe and Digital Cameras for Small Business" will be offered from 6-9 p.m., May 6, at the Southern Miss Small Business Development Center Computer Resource Center, 143 Beach Park Pl., Long Beach. This hands-on computer workshop will cover how to download pictures from a digital camera, send pictures and more. Each participant is encouraged to bring his or her own digital camera if they have one. The early bird fee is $89 (payment must be received by April 29) and the regular fee is $99 (after April 29). Seating is limited. Participants must prepay.

• The workshop "Writing a Winning Business Plan" will be offered from 12:30-3 p.m., May 11, at the Biloxi Port Commission Building, 693 Beach Blvd. (second floor), Biloxi. Topics to be covered at this workshop include: business plan dos and don'ts, tips, length, content, and resources, among other topics. The fee is $25 per person.

• The workshop "Show Me the Money" will be offered from 12:30-3 p.m., May 18, at the Biloxi Port Commission Building. Representatives from a variety of local, state and federal agencies will speak at this workshop regarding their agencies' loan programs and services. Invited speakers include: U.S. Small Business Administration, Mississippi Business Finance Corporation, Hancock Bank, Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District and Greater Biloxi Economic Development Foundation. The fee is $25 per person.

• The workshop "Advanced QuickBooks Pro" will be offered from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., May 26 and June 2, at the Southern Miss Small Business Development Center Computer Resource Center. This two-part, hands-on computer workshop is for anyone who has already attended the "Beginners QuickBooks" class or for anyone who is very familiar with QuickBooks software. The early bird fee is $255 (payment must be received by May 19) and the regular fee is $265 (after May 19). Seating is limited. The participants must prepay.

To register and prepay the workshop fee for any of the above workshops, mail a check made payable to the Southern Miss Small Business Development Center to 143 Beach Park Pl., Long Beach, MS 39560. The Southern Miss SBDC now accepts VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express credit cards, as additional ways of payment.

If you prepay for a workshop, and are not able to attend, your workshop registration fee will be fully refunded. For a refund, contact the Small Business Development Center at least three working days prior to the workshop.

Workshops are subject to cancellation if pre-registration minimums are not met.
