HATTIESBURG- The University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Marketing and Public Relations added a new member to its team this year and added duties for several current employees in an effort to serve the university at full strength.

Markeda Wade has been named university proofreader for Southern Miss. A native of Guntown, Wade graduated from Baldwyn High School in Baldwyn and has a bachelor's degree in English and is working toward a master's degree at Southern Miss. She taught high school for two years before returning to begin graduate school. Since then, she's tutored at the Writing Center, taught composition and grammar courses as a graduate assistant and adjunct faculty member, and, most recently, worked as an editor in the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage.

In addition to working as the university proofreader, she's working on her master's thesis in literature.

"This position is a good opportunity for me to implement the lessons and valuable skills I've learned and taught at Southern Miss," Wade said. "I look forward to the experience."

Marketing and Public Relations Director Lisa S. Mader says Wade complements the department. "Markeda is very bright and talented," she said. "We know she'll fit right in because of her previous experience working at the university. We welcome her and know she'll do a great job."

Former university proofreader Angela H. Cutrer has been named an assistant director for news and marketing with the department. Cutrer, who hails from Osyka is a graduate of South Pike High School in Magnolia, Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, and Southern Miss, where she earned a double bachelor's degree in English and journalism. She will finish studies for a master's degree in mass communication at Southern Miss this summer. Cutrer has been with the university since 2001.

Melanie Kemp has been named marketing and financial affairs manager. She is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School in Collinsville, Meridian Community College, and earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from Southern Miss. She will complete studies on a master's degree in mass communication this summer. She has been with the university since 2002.

David Tisdale of Hattiesburg has been named an assistant director for news and marketing. He graduated from Hattiesburg High School and received a bachelor's degree in English and a graduate degree in political science from Southern Miss. He has been with the university since 1995.

Jennifer Watson of Columbus, Ohio, and Palo Alto, Calif., joined the Marketing and Public Relations staff in January 2002 as an editorial assistant. She is now employed as the Web developer. Watson graduated from Marlboro College in Vermont, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English with a double minor in psychology and theater. She attended graduate school for directing for theater at San Francisco State University.

Rounding out the department is Assistant Proofreader Nova Corley, Editorial Assistant Landy Laird, Assistant Director for News and Marketing Christopher Mapp, Media Productions Manager Stephen Rouse, Marketing and Public Relations Assistant Leigh Anne Wilson and Licensing Specialist Gene Fitts.
