Hattiesburg- Edward A. "Ed" Williamson, founder of The Edward A. Williamson Law Firm in Philadelphia, Miss., has been elected to the board of directors of The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation in Hattiesburg.

A Neshoba County native, Williamson earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science at Southern Miss in 1968 and a juris doctorate in 1973 from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. He is also a former district attorney, Mississippi Circuit Court Judge and a 1988 graduate of the National Judicial College.

A member of The USM Foundation Honor Club, Williamson and his wife Gloria established the Ashley Dawn Williamson Memorial Scholarship Fund for Nontraditional Students at Southern Miss in memory of their daughter and her love for people.

Williamson's involvement at Southern Miss included several positions at the Alumni Association, where he received the Alumni Continuous Service Award in 1993 and the Alumni Outstanding Service Award in 1990. He was elected to the U.S. Alumni Hall of Fame in 2002.

Williamson has been president of the International Alumni Association and president of the Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association. He is also actively involved in several community and civic organizations.

The USM Foundation operates under the direction of a 39-member board of directors, who are all volunteers. Thirteen new board members are selected each year, while 13 end their three-year term. The USM Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation that serves as a fiduciary of private funds donated to Southern Miss.

The Williamsons reside in Philadelphia and are the parents of four daughters. Their daughter Erin is a Southern Miss graduate.
