HATTIESBURG
-- Helping people prepare for a secure retirement is the focus of
"Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement," a seminar
sponsored by The University of Southern Mississippi's Department
of Continuing Education.
The seminar
will be offered in Natchez at the Natchez Convention Center on Tuesdays,
July 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. The instructor will be Robert
Harger, a registered representative with Harger and Company, Inc.,
member NASD and SIPC.
Financial Strategies
for Successful Retirement is designed to offer straightforward answers
to the retirement questions of those nearing retirement. These may
be people looking forward to a planned retirement or those facing
an early retirement because of termination from their jobs.
"The economy
is slow today, and many companies are laying off employees to cut
expanses," Harger said. "These employees are faced with
many decisions, such as what to do with their company's retirement
plan.
"During
the workshop, you will learn how to avoid the early withdrawal 10
percent penalty, begin taking an income immediately from the retirement
plan, and plan for a successful retirement."
The seminar
covers a number of common financial mistakes people make when planning
for their retirement. Among these are not saving enough for retirement,
putting off financial planning, not choosing the right mix of investments,
avoiding estate planning, not knowing how much money you'll need
to retire, missing out on tax reduction strategies and paying costly
retirement plan fees and penalties.
Participants
in the seminar will receive a 204-page, color-illustrated workbook
to help them apply and retain the information from the classes.
The workbook contains up- to-date information on money, investing
and finance, which participants will be able to use as a valuable
reference tool for years to come.
Those who take
the classes will also receive a personal financial fact finder,
a worksheet to help them determine how much income, savings, assets
and debt they currently have.
Following the
last class of the seminar, participants will have the opportunity
to meet privately with their instructor to talk about specific financial
goals.
Unlike many
free workshops that promote specific financial products, Financial
Strategies for Successful Retirement is completely educational.
Tuition for
the seminar is $55. A spouse or guest may be enrolled at no extra
cost. For more information, or to register by phone, contact the
Department of Continuing Education at (601) 266-4186.
