STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. -- Southern Miss marine science professor Dr. Ralph Goodman was recently published in the 75th anniversary book for the Acoustical Society of America.

Goodman, who specializes in underwater acoustics, wrote "A Brief History of Underwater Acoustics" for the Committee on Archives and History of the Acoustical Society of America.

"Professor Goodman's chapter shows how the thread of the history of our field weaves through two world wars and the Cold War of the 20th century," wrote Dr. Peter H. Dahl, chair of the Technical Committee on Underwater Acoustics.

Goodman said he was honored to contribute to the important milestone publication.

"No field of acoustics was more affected by world events or played as important a role in their outcome as the science of underwater acoustics," Goodman said. "To trace the development of the science, it is important to understand how nations' goals directed research."

The Southern Miss Department of Marine Science is strategically located at Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, Miss., home to the world's largest population of oceanographers and hydrographers. The department offers both master's and doctoral degrees in marine science and a master's degree in hydrographic science.
