SOUTHERN MISS PREVIEW GIVES NEW STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY
TO PREPARE FOR COLLEGE

HATTIESBURG -- Courtney Green of Gautier was getting everything she needed to get ready for the fall 2004 semester at The University of Southern Mississippi this week, from completing registration to meeting with her adviser and faculty and staff members at the university.

Equally as important, she got "the time of day," as in personal attention, during Preview, Southern Miss' orientation session, which is going on through the summer to help both students and parents prepare for the college experience in Hattiesburg.

"Everybody has been real nice, just stopping what they were doing to help me," said Green, a transfer student from Mississippi State University.

Remaining Preview sessions are scheduled for June 26, July 1, July 8, and July 15. Freshman move-in dates are August 19-22.

"Preview helps students get oriented to campus, complete registration for their classes and meet their advisers," said Wynde Fitts, director of Freshman Year Experience at Southern Miss. "It's their first real experience as college students."

Southern Style, a group which includes upperclassmen who act as facilitators during Preview, gives new students "a chance to meet with their peers, upperclassmen who can show them the ropes," she said.

Laurie Beezly of Clinton got some tips on dealing with her son's transition from "the nest" to college from Southern Miss staff, who presented programs not only for new students, but also for their parents.

"The important thing we learned is understanding that they (students) need increasing control over their own life," she said. "Their college career is their responsibility, but we learned constructive ways that we can still be of help to them in the process."
