HATTIESBURG – The
University of Southern Mississippi recently honored 10 faculty members
with University Excellence Awards. The recipients chosen were recognized
for outstanding service to the university and for excellence in
teaching.
The deans of each college met to choose from
the pool of finalists the two 2005 overall winners, each of whom
will receive $1,500 for outstanding service and for excellence in
teaching. The remaining recipients each received $500 from the Lucas
Endowment for Faculty Excellence.
Faculty members and their awards are as follows:
Excellence in Service Overall winner: Dr. Susan
Hubble Burchell, interim director and associate professor, Department
of Human Performance and Recreation, College of Health.
"I am honored to receive the Lucas Endowment
Excellence in Service Award because I feel it recognizes all efforts
of the university, who work untiringly in providing quality service
to our university, community, state, and professional organizations,"
Burchell said.
Other Excellence in Service Award winners by
college: Dr. Amy Young, associate professor, Department of Anthropology
and Sociology, College of Arts and Letters; Dr. Michael Vest, professor,
Department of Management and Marketing, College of Business; Dr.
Steve Yuen, professor, Department of Technology Education, College
of Education and Psychology; and Dr. Frank Moore, professor and
chair, Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science and
Technology.
Excellence in Teaching Overall winner: Dr. Phyllis
Jestice, associate professor, Department of History, College of
Arts and Letters.
Other Excellence in Teaching Award winners by
college: Dr. Frank Mixon, professor, Department of Economics, Finance,
and International Business, College of Business; Dr. John McCoy,
associate professor, Department of Psychology, College of Education
and Psychology; Dr. Mary Lux, professor, Department of Medical Technology,
College of Health; and Dr. Pat Biesiot, associate professor, Department
of Biological Sciences, College of Science and Technology.
