HATTIESBURG
- The University of Southern Mississippi will host its 36th
annual Children's Book Festival April 2-4 at the Hattiesburg
Lake Terrace Convention, where the 2003 Southern Miss Medallion
Recipient, Lois Lowry, will be honored.
Lowry
was awarded the 1994 Newbery Medal for The Giver and the 1990
Newbery Medal for Number the Stars. She lives and writes in
Cambridge, Massachusetts.
"The
festival's celebration of children's literature, which began
in 1968, has expanded with each year to bring the most talented
authors and illustrators to Mississippi," said Dr. Rosemary
Chance, director of the festival. "Through its tradition
of celebrating children's literature, the festival brings
recognition throughout the United States to the university,
to the School of Library and Information Science and to the
de Grummond Children's Literature Collection."
Other
guest writers, illustrators and educators scheduled to present
at the festival include Floyd Cooper, an illustrator of picture
books that include African-American characters; Sharon Draper,
1997 National Teacher of the Year and writer of young adult
fiction; Eliza Dresang, the 2003 Ezra Jack Keats lecturer
and associate professor of library science at Florida State
University; Mary Hamilton, a professional storyteller, recording
artist and workshop leader from Kentucky; Peter Sis, an award-winning
illustrator and author and winner of the 1998 Caldecott Honor
for Starry Messenger, a picture biography of Galileo; and
Nancy Willard, essayist, literary critic, novelist and lecturer
of English at Vassar College, who also won the Newbery Award
