HATTIESBURG -- A retired veteran professor of sociology will complete instruction duties for two sociology classes this semester at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Dr. Annette Justine Jones, who was a member of the faculty at Towson State University in Baltimore, Md., for more than 30 years, will teach Sociology 101 and Sociology 425/524 at Southern Miss through the remainder of the spring semester. She began teaching the classes March 22.

The classes were previously taught by Dr. Frank Glamser, who was recently suspended by the university.

"I think we are extremely lucky to have someone of Dr. Jones' quality and caliber, having recently retired and living locally," said Dr. Elliot Pood, dean of the Southern Miss College of Arts and Letters. "I think our students will benefit greatly from her experience."

A native of Hattiesburg and currently a resident of Laurel, Jones received her undergraduate degree in sociology from Millsaps College in 1963. She later earned a master's degree from The George Washington University, and a doctorate from Tulane University. She participated in postdoctoral work from 1984-1985 as a visiting scientist in the Department of Population Dynamics in Johns Hopkins University's School of Hygiene and Public Health. "We want to keep the students on schedule to complete the course and allow them to be able to graduate, and I'm delighted to assist with that," she said.

"I love being in the classroom," she said. "You can't be in higher education and not enjoy the students."

Jones retired from Towson State in 1997, and is an associate professor emeritus at the university. She is a member or former member of several sociological associations and other academic organizations.
