SOUTHERN MISS GULF COAST AMBASSADOR SERIES
TO PRESENT "LEGENDS OF JAZZ" MARCH 9

LONG BEACH --The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Ambassador Series will present "Legends of Jazz," featuring the Southern Miss Jazz Sextet, March 9. The 7 p.m. concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Fine Arts Auditorium at the Jackson County campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gautier. The Southern Miss Jazz Sextet was started in 1998 by a group of graduate and undergraduate students involved in the Southern Miss Jazz Studies program. They wrote their own arrangements as well as original compositions for the group. A synergy developed between the members, and what was only supposed to last two semesters has continued on to the present. The "Legends of Jazz" performance will include works by such well-known jazz musicians as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, among others. The Southern Miss Jazz Sextet is directed by Larry Panella, director of jazz studies at Southern Miss. For more information, call Joanne Edwards at (228) 863-9879.
