SOUTHERN MISS GULF COAST BUSINESS STUDENTS RECEIVE EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS AWARDS

LONG BEACH -- Twelve business students from The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast were recognized recently at the College of Business and Economic Development's 2004 Excellence in Business Awards Luncheon.

Hosted by the ChevronTexaco Pascagoula Refinery, the luncheon was held May 1 at the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

"Recognizing the accomplishments of our students is something we believe is very important," said Dr. Harold Doty, dean of the College of Business and Economic Development. "In addition to completing course work toward their degrees, these students work full time, have families and mortgages. The remarkable thing is that they balance their commitments so well."

Business administration major Evelyn Herrington, a senior from Biloxi, received the Excellence in Management Award, sponsored by ChevronTexaco.

Accounting major Stacy Rushing, a senior from Biloxi, and accounting major Linda Zakkak, a senior from Gulfport, received the Excellence in Business Administration Award from ChevronTexaco.

Management information systems major Melissa Dorn, a senior from Waveland, and management information systems major Jennifer Horton, a senior from Moss Point, received the Excellence in Management Information Systems Award from ChevronTexaco.

Business administration management major Lisa Phillips, a junior from Bay St. Louis, received the Scholarship in Management Award, sponsored by Munro Petroleum.

Business administration major Heather Buras, a senior from Kiln, received the Scholarship in Business Administration Award, sponsored by "The Sun Herald."

Management information systems major Kelly Coleman, a sophomore from Long Beach, received the Scholarship in Management Information Systems Award, sponsored by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems.

Accounting major Thien Phan, a senior from Pass Christian, and Cheryl Stewart, a senior from Lucedale, went home with the Outstanding Senior in Accounting Award, sponsored by the accounting firm of Alexander, Van Loon, Sloan, Levens and Favre.

Accounting major Shara Stone, a junior from Vancleave, received the Outstanding Junior in Accounting Award, sponsored by Piltz, Williams, LaRosa and Company.

Accounting major Lianne Kenney, a junior from Long Beach, received the Scholarship Award, sponsored by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Society of CPAs.

Hospitality management major Ryan Heafner, a senior from Jackson, received the Outstanding Senior in Tourism Management Award, sponsored by Rex Distributing.

Rachel Rath, a graduate student from Long Beach enrolled in the university's MBA program, received the MBA Excellence Award, sponsored by the College of Business and Economic Development Business Advisory Council.
