HATTIESBURG The University of Southern Mississippi will offer contract and project management courses this year at the Stennis Space Center Conference Center, with Harry Cleaver Jr. to serve as instructor for all three courses.

The first course, Basic Government Contracts Management, will be offered June 27 - July 1. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the key concepts of federal government contracting via Requests for Proposals. Both new and experienced staff benefit from numerous real-world examples to avoid the pitfalls of Federal Acquisition Regulation 15 procurements.

Other topics to be covered in this course include understanding the federal government procurement system; legal aspects of government contracting; required and optional contract clauses; contract types and structuring; cost and price analysis; and elements of contract administration.

The second course, Project Management Fundamentals will be offered August 15-19. In this course, participants can learn the major elements of project management during planning, initiation, and execution with emphasis on federal high-tech projects with hard or soft deliverables, as well as participation in practical exercise in requirements analysis, WBS generation, scheduling aspects, risk management, and earned value analysis.

The third course, Advanced Contract Management, will be offered Oct. 10-14.

The course gives participants an opportunity to understand key contractual concepts of Federal Acquisition Regulation 15 procurements, along with proposal preparation and contract negotiations. Other topics to be covered include proposal preparation; current procurement issues; subcontract management; effective negotiations; cost accounting standards and principles; and financial management of government contracts.

All three courses will be held at the SSC Conference Center's Santa Rosa Room from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee for each course is $995. For more information, contact Southern Miss Continuing Education at (601) 266-4186.
