LONG BEACH - The Association of Office Professionals (AOP) hosted a bake sale Oct. 22 to benefit Lisa Meredith, a senior nursing student at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, who was recently diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer.

A total of $260.54 was raised during the bake sale and was donated to Meredith's account at the USM Federal Credit Union.

When AOP members heard of Meredith's diagnosis, they decided that the bake sale would be a good way to honor and assist her, AOP Director Vicki Watkins said.

"I'm proud of our AOP members and the university community for helping make the bake sale a success, and I'm equally as grateful to have been a part of this effort to help a student in need," Watkins said. "This bake sale is just part of the AOP's mission to serve the community."

AOP would also like to thank everyone who donated, baked and worked the bake sale.

Meredith, who would have been a senior nursing student this year, was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer in July and started treatment in August.

In her plan to become a registered nurse, Meredith chose to make studying her primary focus during nursing school and was not employed full time. This choice left her without medical insurance, and due to other roadblocks she is currently unable to secure state assistance.

The Student Nurses' Association has set up an account at the USM Federal Credit Union in her name for those who would like to make a donation. The credit union is located at 730 East Beach Blvd., Long Beach, Miss., 39560. Donors can also contact the Credit Union by calling (228) 867-8786 to transfer funds.
