Southern Miss grad shares personal experiences with humor, insight

HATTIESBURG -- The Division of Recreational Sports at The University of Southern Mississippi, together with the Office of Greek Life and Southern Beverage Co., will host Carolyn Cornelison's "Courage to Care" presentation at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in Bennett Auditorium on Southern Miss' Hattiesburg campus.

Through her thoughtful, personal and humorous presentation, Cornelison takes a very realistic look at college drinking, taking responsibility and recognizing abuse. Her philosophy, detailed in the presentation, includes the three keys to caring: knowledge, sensitivity and courage. Cornelison draws on her own personal experiences as both a sorority member and athlete to increase knowledge, promote courage and inspire others.

Cornelison earned a master's degree at Southern Miss and a doctorate at Florida State University. At FSU, she worked as a national staff member for the BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network. Her personal story is featured in the book Emerging Women: The Widening Stream and will soon be the focus of a Lifetime movie. A member of the national Anheuser-Busch Consumer Awareness and Education Speakers Bureau, Cornelison has presented on more than 500 campuses nationwide. This is her second presentation on the Southern Miss campus.
