Hattiesburg—University of Southern Mississippi
theater professor Monica Hayes lends her years of acting and directing
experience to one of the three repertory productions in the 30th
anniversary season of Southern Arena Theatre (SAT).
Opening July 13, Hayes takes on Neil Simon’s hilarious version
of stories of The Good Doctor by Anton Chekhov, directing
a cast of seven actors playing multiple roles.
“There’s something for everyone,” Hayes stated. “There are 10
stories, each with its own delightful characters. Some are rowdy,
physical comedy while others are sweet, poignant tales with a twinkle
behind the eye.”
In addition to directing, Hayes is a highly trained and experienced
actor. In the United States, she has worked professionally in Chicago,
New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Jackson and Hilton Head. She also
has "played in Peoria," her hometown. Her work includes
excursions into film, television, industrials, and voice-overs.
Presented to critical acclaim on Broadway and across the United
States, The Good Doctor presents one scene after another
of charming characters in sometimes near impossible circumstances.
Kacey Musick, a junior at Southern Miss and Vancleave native, who
is working on her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Performance will
play one of these unique characters.
“This show is exciting because it is very witty and bold, yet very
sweet and endearing,” Musick said. “It’s going to be a show for
both audience and actors.” The young actor is also spending much
of her time as the assistant stage manager for another SAT play,
Around the World in Eighty Days.
The Good Doctor runs July 13-14, 18, 21, 26, 29, and
Aug. 2, with matinees on July 22 and 30 at the Gilbert F. Hartwig
Theatre. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m., while matinees
begin at 2 p.m. Individual show tickets are $12 for adults; $10
for senior citizens, Southern Miss faculty and staff, and military;
and $6 for students.
Tickets are on sale June 19, and this show is appropriate for
all ages. Call the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 601.266.5418 or
800.844.8425 or order online at www.southernmisstickets.com.
Tickets also may be purchased at the theater box office one hour
prior to curtain time for each performance on a space available
basis.
SAT is celebrating its 30th anniversary season, bringing another
year of surprising and upbeat summer entertainment to the Hattiesburg
area. The season is made up of three plays running in repertory
— meaning all three productions run throughout the season in rotation.
For the anniversary year, however, SAT will offer more performances
and venues by including extra matinees and a show in the Martha
R. Tatum Theatre. For more information on the SAT season, go to
www.usm.edu/arts.
