LONG BEACH – Judy Isbell, director of Web-based marketing, and Shelia White, director of marketing and public relations at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, each won a Lantern Award at the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) conference held this month in New Orleans.

“Southern Miss Gulf Coast Hurricane Katrina Web” won Isbell the Lantern in the Web Site, External Communication Category. The entry highlighted the communication strategy and Web site implementation in the months following Hurricane Katrina.

White received the top award in the Feature Stories Category for her story, “Friendship Oak: A Symbol of Strength.” Written in the days following Hurricane Katrina, the feature highlighted the survival of the 500-year-old live oak tree on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The Lantern Award is given to work that is deemed outstanding in its field and surpasses all other entries in the category. The competition was open to public relations practitioners in the four-state region of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle.

Dayonne McGuire, director of enrollment and marketing, also received the designation of senior practitioner by the organization. Nomination and selection are made by each local chapter based on criteria set by SPRF.
