| HATTIESBURG – The University
of Southern Mississippi Foundation announced today a $10,000
gift from the Mississippi Manufacturers Association (MMA) in
Jackson.
A first-time gift to Southern Miss, the MMA Chairman’s Award
was presented by outgoing chairman Bobby Dews of Hattiesburg.
This gift will be used for scholarships in the Southern Miss
School of Construction’s Department of Industrial Engineering
Technology.
“I’m proud of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association for
awarding $10,000 each year to the chairman to give to their
university of choice. The award is a wonderful way to help develop
new talent for the future of manufacturing,” said Bobby Dews,
immediate past chairman of MMA’s board of directors, whose term
ended in October.
“My family has been involved with the university for 65 years
or more, and I’m a Southern Miss graduate, so this was an obvious
choice to help the university develop their industrial technology
program, which is essentially manufacturing. We want to attract
the best and the brightest students to Southern Miss. I hope
this will help in some way toward that goal.”
The mission of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association is
to provide high-quality goods and services to its members and
to identify, disseminate and utilize information necessary to
promote a strong manufacturing environment within Mississippi.
For more than 20 years, the MMA has represented the interests
of Mississippi’s manufacturers at both the state and national
levels.
“The MMA Chairman’s Award represents the association’s commitment
to education in Mississippi,” said Jay Moon, MMA’s president
and chief executive officer. “We recognize that a well-educated,
well-trained workforce is the key to bringing industry to the
state and remaining competitive in our global economy.
“MMA also honors the service of our outgoing chairman of the
board each year by having the gift presented in the chairman’s
name to the educational institution of his choice. We are proud
that Bobby Dews, MMA’s recent chairman, has chosen to present
the 2005 Chairman’s Award to the Southern Miss School of Construction
and the Department of Industrial Engineering Technology. Through
supplements to the current scholarship program, we hope this
gift will encourage Mississippi’s best students to remain in
the state and to continue to improve Mississippi industry.”
“We’re grateful to Bobby Dews and the MMA for this gift to
Southern Miss,” said Southern Miss President Dr. Shelby Thames.
“This will provide students with the opportunity to get a great
education at Southern Miss and enter into a field that has a
great need for bright, skilled individuals who can help grow
our state’s economy and strengthen our quality of life.”
