HATTIESBURG – The University of Southern Mississippi
raised $14,680 for breast cancer awareness and education during
the recent Deanna Favre Hope Foundation walk on the Hattiesburg
campus.
A breast cancer survivor herself, Deanna Favre, wife of Green
Bay Packer quarterback Brett Favre, decided to join Southern
Miss in supporting the fighters and survivors of breast cancer.
Forrest General Hospital donated $5,000 to sponsor the walk
on Oct. 27, and all of the money raised during the walk was
donated to the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation for breast cancer
awareness education.
The Paint Southern Miss Pink month included a ceremony in honor
of those who have survived breast cancer, of those who lost
their lives to breast cancer, and of those who are fighting
the battle of breast cancer. The ceremony included prayers and
speakers encouraging breast cancer awareness and education.
A contest held around the Southern Miss campus for the “Most
Pink” building was also held. Faculty, staff and students had
a chance to show support to those participating in the walk
by decorating buildings and balconies with pink. The “Southern
Survivors” judged the pink contest and awarded the College of
Health first place. Roberts Hall won second place, and Kappa
Alpha Theta won first place for the balconies.
The largest turnout was at the Deanna Favre Hope walk, with
624 walkers showing their support for the cause. The month and
walk would not have been such a success if it were not for Mary
Beth Bankson Walker, assistant director of Student Activities
and the Paint Southern Miss Pink committee. “The walk was a
fantastic success,” Walker said.
“We had more men and women participate than I ever could have
imagined.”
