2012 Butch Oustalet Gulf Coast Outstanding Faculty Awards Presented

During The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast’s annual Fall Convocation, the 2012 Butch Oustalet Gulf Coast Outstanding Faculty Awards were presented to recipients in the areas of research, teaching and service.

The Research Award was presented to Dr. Fujun Lai, professor of management in the College of Business and McCarty Distinguished Professor of Management Information Systems and Decision Sciences. Lai, who has long been a well-published scholar, had seven peer-reviewed journal articles published in the past year. Additionally, he was recognized by Decision Science Journal as the author of the top article published in the journal in 2010.   

Assistant professor of communications Dr. Casey Maugh was named recipient of the Teaching Award.Maugh earned extraordinary student evaluations in all of her courses in 2011 and implemented an innovative approach in her Gender and Communication course, in which she observed the distinctive organizational and collective decision-making skills of groups of male and female students in class. In addition to her challenging public speaking courses, Maugh also served as director of the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Campus Speaking and Writing Center in 2011.

The Service Award was presented to associate professor of history Dr. Deanne Nuwer, who has been an active Gulf Coast faculty member in both the university and the Gulf Coast community. She has been instrumental in maintaining the university’s Katrina Research Center, which has been used to facilitate community outreach for the university across the coast. Additionally, she has been an asset in planning the development of the Evelyn Gandy Women’s Leadership Center on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The Butch Oustalet Gulf Coast Distinguished Faculty Awards, sponsored by the Butch Oustalet family, were created to recognize Southern Miss Gulf Coast faculty who have demonstrated exemplary achievements in one of the three areas of research, teaching and service. Each award winner received a $750 honorarium and a plaque recognizing their achievement. The winners, selected by a five-member committee, were judged on submitted material supporting the specified area of distinction.
