Retired businessman Spencer Adams and budding entrepreneur Jared Loftus were honored as 2012 Alumni of the Year by The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business during a luncheon on Friday, Nov. 2 at Southern Oaks in Hattiesburg.

Adams, former president and CEO of Pickett & Adams Insurance, received the Boardman Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award. Loftus, president and CEO of online apparel store College District, was presented the Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year Award.

“I think, as you get older, you appreciate these kinds of honors a little more,” said Adams, who founded his insurance company in 1974 and retired in 2011. “While I can’t say that I was the model student during my time at Southern Miss, I will say that I have never once apologized for the education I received there. I would put it up against anyone else’s anytime.”

Adams (class of 1966) is no stranger to the Southern Miss family having served on numerous search committees for head coaches, athletics directors, deans and presidents. He is also a founding member of the Business Advisory Council which serves the College of Business.

Loftus (class of 2004) began his football T-shirt business in Baton Rouge shortly after earning his degree at Southern Miss. That fledgling operation has grown to a hugely successful online company that features a wide variety of custom college apparel. He was named to the Baton Rouge Top 40 Under 40 in 2011.

“Wow, I’m very flattered to even be considered for this award,” said Loftus. “I’m proud of my time at Southern Miss and I owe a lot of where I am today to what I gained while there.”

When asked to pick out his fondest memory while attending Southern Miss, Loftus said: “It was after we upset TCU in 2003, and I rode on the goal post after the fans tore it down. That was amazing.”

The Boardman awards are presented in conjunction with the Boardman Forum, established by Joseph Boardman of Gulfport, Miss. The Forum also sponsors the Boardman Entrepreneur of the Year Award and fosters interaction with students through class presentations by professionals throughout the year.
