More than 300 high school-age young men from across the state arrived on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus Sunday for Boys State.

Sponsored by the American Legion, Boys State is a weeklong program that teaches delegates the inner workings of local, state and national government and the principles of citizenship. Delegates are chosen by American Legion posts across the state based on leadership potential, academic achievement and community service, among other criteria.

Several public officials from across the political spectrum and from all levels of state government will come to campus this week to speak to the delegates on various topics relating to citizenship, government and the political process.
