The task of finding a good job can prove daunting in these stringent economic times. The 2012 Pine Belt Job Fair, set for Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center, can certainly help.

The Job Fair, which is part of Gov. Phil Bryant’s Job Fair Network, will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The fair is free and open to everyone – but especially those seeking employment.

“This job fair has a tremendous effect on Hattiesburg and the entire Pine Belt,” said Amy Yeend, assistant director of Career Services at The University of Southern Mississippi and a member of the fair’s planning committee. “Due to the economic situation of the last few years, so many people in our community are either unemployed or underemployed. By providing an opportunity for job seekers to connect with employers and real opportunities, this event gives them a chance to better provide for themselves and their families.”

Last year’s Job Fair drew nearly 60 prospective employers and more than 1,100 job applicants. More importantly, 134 job offers were made on the day of the fair.

The Governor’s Job Fair Network is a unique, proactive, employment assistance resource for the unemployed, employers and communities of Mississippi. The ultimate objective of the Network is job placement. For business and industry, the job fairs provide their human resource representatives the opportunity to interview a variety of potential employees.

Kathy Killam, assistant director of Career Services at Southern Miss, notes that the Job Fair provides a necessary link between employers and job seekers by bringing large numbers of both together in one place, at one time.

“Southern Miss, along with other area institutions, has been -- and will be -- present for those wanting to increase their employment opportunities by improving their knowledge and skills through additional education, as part of this important event,” said Killam, who also serves on the fair’s planning committee.
