Center for Writers Spring Visiting Writer Series Begins March 5

The Center for Writers at The University of Southern Mississippi will host the first of three readings by visiting writers on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the International Center, room 101.  All events in this series are free and open to the public.

The first reading will feature Adam Vines, author of The Coal Life and editor of the Birmingham Poetry Review. He also teaches at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
 
The second reading in the series will be held Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the International Center room 101. Featured guest Justin Torres is the author of the novel We the Animals. His stories and essays have appeared in Glimmer Train, Granta, the Guardian, Harper’sthe New Yorker, and Tin House and have been featured on NPR. 

The third and final reading in the series will be Tuesday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Woods Theatre of the Theatre and Dance Building. Alex Lemon is the author of Happy: A Memoir and four poetry collections: Mosquito, Hallelujah Blackout, Fancy Beasts and The Wish Book.  His writing has appeared in Esquire, American Poetry Review, The Huffington Post, Ploughshares, Best American Poetry, Tin House, Kenyon Review, AGNI, New England Review, The Southern Review and jubilat, among others.

The Center for Writers is a creative writing program housed in the College of Arts and Letters’ Department of English. Between 35 and 40 students work toward M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English with emphases in fiction or poetry, and each student completes a creative thesis or dissertation to fulfill requirements for the degree.  The Center offers workshops in fiction, non-fiction, prose, and poetry by the program's distinguished faculty. Additional courses in craft, literary forms, and teaching creative writing are also offered regularly, and students participate in a regular reading series and in the publication of a student journalProductThe department is also home to the Mississippi Review, a nationally recognized literary magazine.
