The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will present “Finding Inner Peace,” a concert premiere featuring the newly commissioned work of Dr. Benjamin Harlan of New Orleans.
The first performance is scheduled for Friday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis. The encore performance, featuring additional choirs from New Orleans and Hattiesburg, will be part of the Trinity Artist Series at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 10.
Harlan’s The Seven Last Words of Christ is a fresh, musical setting of the sacred and familiar text. The new work features oboe, cello and piano accompaniment with Harlan as the pianist. The concerts will also feature inspiring texts and music ranging in spectrum from reflective to jubilant.
Now in its 16th year at Southern Miss, the civic chorale serves as a community outreach program welcoming all members of the Mississippi Gulf Coast community. More than 90 members sing in the ensemble, led by John Flanery, assistant choral director at Southern Miss.
“Finding Inner Peace” is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.usm.edu/gc/civic_chorale or call 228.865.4573.
