University of Southern Mississippi student Bethany Cuevas of Long Beach won the title of Miss Mid-South this past January and will have the chance to compete for the title of Miss Mississippi this summer in Vicksburg.

Attending the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Cuevas is majoring in elementary education and expects to graduate in 2016. At Southern Miss, Cuevas serves as a member of the Southern Connection Leadership Team. As a student leader, she displays Southern Miss pride while assisting fellow students and participating in university and community events.

Competing in pageants since the age of 7 weeks, this will be Cuevas’s first attempt at the winning the title of Miss Mississippi. With a total of 41 contestants in the state pageant, Cuevas says she’s “most excited about bonding with all the contestants.”

Cuevas adds, “I decided to compete in this pageant because I have always dreamed of stepping foot on the Miss Mississippi Pageant stage. My favorite part of competing in pageants is spending time with the new people I meet because we become family.”

With her platform focused on “Volunteerism: Every hour Counts,” Cuevas selected a project close to her heart since she volunteers for multiple organizations. In addition to her platform, Cuevas is also required to perform a talent during the competition. For the pageant, she will perform a jazz dance to the song, “My Strongest Suit,” from the Broadway musical, “Aida.”

For any fellow Golden Eagles looking to help Cuevas as she prepares for the Miss Mississippi pageant, she is required to sell sponsorship advertisements in the pageant’s program. The Miss Mississippi pageant will be held July 9 – 12 in Vicksburg.
