Perhaps University of Southern Mississippi student Laci Crager summed up the significance of “Passion for Fashion” with one simple assessment: “Where else can you buy a nice shirt for two dollars?”
Crager is just one of many Southern Miss students working in shifts during the annual “Passion for Fashion” consignment sale (April 26-30) on the second floor of the R.C. Cook Union Building on the Hattiesburg campus. The event is coordinated by students in Dr. Brigitte Burgess’ fashion promotion and analysis class.
On Thursday, April 28 the event expanded to include a “Fashion Day: Let’s Talk Shop,” which featured presentations on entrepreneurship and store management, visual merchandising and buying and corporate operations. Business professionals from across South Mississippi addressed Southern Miss students as well as students from several Mississippi high schools.
Those who browse the “Passion for Fashion” merchandise will find a multitude of items in excellent condition. Items for sale include suits, skirts, blouses, coats, jackets, blazers, business attire, casual attire, handbags, wallets, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, watches, hats, scarves and gloves.
Consigners will receive 60 percent of the selling price for items that are purchased. Net proceeds from the event will be used to fund academic scholarships, travel, research grants for undergraduates and competitive awards such as prize money in the form of grants for fashion merchandising students. Many of the items not sold are donated to charity with the owners’ consent.
The “Passion for Fashion” sale hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 601.266.4627.
