The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach chartered two new student organizations during the fall semester. The Alliance for Equality and Student Veteran’s Association were both approved by the Student Organizations Council to serve as organizations for Southern Miss Gulf Coast students.
The Alliance for Equality, led by student president Eric Brans, was created to provide a supportive, safe social setting for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersexed, and asexual persons, their friends and supporters. The organization is prepared to provide educational resources to the university and community regarding issues of gender and sexual diversity. Dr. Douglas Bristol, associate professor of history at Southern Miss Gulf Coast, serves as the faculty advisor for Alliance for Equality.
Creating a chapter from the national membership organization, the Student Veteran’s Association is focused on addressing the needs and concerns of veterans in higher education. Led by student president Karen Glendenning, who is retired from the U.S. Navy, the Student Veteran’s Association also offers mentoring, networking, and camaraderie for current and former military personnel at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. The faculty advisor for the organization is Mary Funk, also retired from the U.S. Navy, who serves as the coordinator for student success at Southern Miss Gulf Coast.
The Student Organizations Council serves as an advisory group for all student organizations looking to receive official recognition as a member of the university community. The function of the council is to review, with the requesting organizations, all applications for chartering a student organization and then vote on whether to grant an organization its charter.
The Student Organizations Council consists of faculty, staff and student representatives from the chartered student organizations at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. Once approved by the council, organization information is submitted to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs for final approval.
