The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host the 2013 Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. in the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. This year’s ceremony will feature guest speaker Karen Sock, president and CEO of Sock Enterprises Inc.
Sock, whose long and varied career at major hotel and casino gaming companies, allowed her to develop professional skills as a hotel, casino, resort and entertainment industry executive. She has provided inspirational leadership to staffs of more than 2,800 employees and mentored countless staffers to successfully achieve their professional and personal growth goals.
“Karen Sock has served as an inspiration to many people and will no doubt motivate our graduates to achieve their goals as they prepare to excel in their careers,” said Southern Miss Gulf Coast Vice President and Campus Executive Officer Frances Lucas. “We are honored to have a great leader, both in the industry and the community, speak at such a special event at Southern Miss Gulf Coast.”
Having received numerous awards and recognition for her many contributions to the business and non-profit communities, Sock was appointed in 2007 by Governor Haley Barbour to the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service. She serves on the board and executive committee of the United Way of South Mississippi where she served as the 2009 Campaign Chairwoman.
She is the recipient of the 2009 United States, Presidential Award for Volunteer Service and also serves on the board and executive committee of the Gulf Coast Business Council and the John L. Knight Foundation, Community Impact Advisory Board.
Sock, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, is married and has a daughter. She resides in Biloxi.
