Katrina Research Center to Honor Edgewater Cleaners for Quilt Project Support

Main Content

The University of Southern Mississippi Katrina Research Center invites the community to a reception honoring Edgewater Cleaners for their support of two quilts made from volunteers’ t-shirts following Hurricane Katrina. The reception and quilt display will be held Friday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at Edgewater Cleaners, located at 2575 Pass Road in Biloxi.

Hands On Mississippi collected more than 100 t-shirts from Hurricane Katrina volunteers as a memento of their service to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The t-shirts were then donated to the Southern Miss Katrina Research Center who made it their mission to create quilts using the t-shirts. Edgewater Cleaners donated their services to clean the t-shirts.

In 2010, the Katrina Research Center received a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council to create two king-size quilts from the t-shirts. One quilt will be on display at Edgewater Cleaners and the second quilt is on display at the Katrina Research Center, located on the third floor of the university’s Gulf Park campus library.
