The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business has reached an historic milestone with inclusion among the country’s Top-200 undergraduate business programs as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
The magazine’s 2012 rankings put Southern Miss in elite company. According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), there are approximately 13,000 business programs worldwide. Of that total only 655 (less than five percent) have qualified for AACSB accreditation. This marks the first time Southern Miss has climbed inside the Top-200 list.
“We are honored that the hard work of our faculty and staff has been recognized yet again by the deans and faculty of AACSB-accredited business schools,” said Dr. Joseph Peyrefitte, interim dean of the College of Business at Southern Miss. “Our placement in the rankings is a testament to the confidence of our peers in the quality of our programs and our commitment to continuous improvement.”
U.S. News & World Report surveyed deans and senior faculty at each AACSB-accredited undergraduate business program earlier this spring. Participants were asked to rate the quality of all programs with which they were familiar on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished). Southern Miss came in at No. 199 in the latest rankings.
“This is wonderful news and a great day for USM,” said Dr. Leisa Flynn, chair of the Department of Management and Fashion Merchandising. “Our business school is recognized among the top 200 in the country for the first time. It is a result of the hard work of a dedicated faculty and set of talented senior administrators.”
This noteworthy recognition comes on the heels of transformative developments within the Southern Miss College of Business. In July construction began on Scianna Hall, a 93,000-square-foot facility that will house the College of Business. The building, with an estimated construction cost of $30 million, is named for Southern Miss alumnus Chuck Scianna, who committed $6 million to the project.
The College of Business features five departments – the School of Accountancy; the Department of Management and Fashion Merchandising; the Department of Finance, Real Estate and Business Law; the Department of Management and International Business and the Department of Casino, Hospitality and Tourism Management. Approximately 2,200 students are currently enrolled as business majors at Southern Miss.
