Mobile Area Students Selected as Southern Style Leaders at Southern Miss

Six University of Southern Mississippi students from the Mobile area have been selected as members of Southern Style for 2011.

The students are as follows:

Spanish Fort

  • Nikki Snellman, a sophomore elementary/special education major, is the daughter of Dale Snellman of Dauphin Island, Ala., and Michelle and Gavin Dixon of Spanish Fort, Ala. She serves as social chair for Chi Omega sorority and is a recruiter for the Southern Miss football office.

Semmes

  • Ashton Turberville, a senior interdisciplinary studies major, is the daughter of Tony and Sonia Turberville. She serves as vice president of membership of Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Mobile

  • John Hii, a sophomore physical education/sports coaching major, is the son of Paul and Theda Hii. He is a Leadership Ambassador, a resident hall assistant, vice president of Relay for Life and a member of Golden Key Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
  • Zachary Butler, a sophomore mathematics major, is the son of Jennifer and Charles Moses. He is a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, The Southerner yearbook staff and Lambda Sigma Honor Society.

Gulfport

  • Cory Gunkel, a junior journalism major, is the son of Andy and Pam Gunkel. He is a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, the Student Government Association, The Legacy and The Varsity.
  • Mary Catherine Price, a sophomore nursing major, is the daughter of James and Charlotte Price. She is a member of Chi Omega fraternity, The Legacy, the Ping Pong Club and Eagle Connection.

Southern Style is a highly selective group of student leaders who serve as official hosts and hostesses for Southern Miss. Students are chosen each year through a three-phase selection process. One of the main responsibilities of Southern Style members is to serve as orientation leaders during the summer.

Southern Style members have the opportunity to meet all new students and their parents through numerous orientation sessions. Other Southern Style responsibilities include assisting during Founders Day, Golden Eagle Welcome Week and all commencement ceremonies. Additionally, they attend recruitment functions and serve as support staff for the First Year Experience office.
