New Course Promoting Sustainable Living Available at Southern Miss May 16-20

The Ploughshare Institute for Sustainable Culture, in partnership with the Office of Professional Development and Outreach, host “An Introduction to Sustainable Living Course” May 16-20 on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus.

This course will be offered as a mini session and participants who attend may receive either personal enrichment/professional development or three academic credit hours.

“For more than 15 years, The Ploughshare Institute for Sustainable Culture has been teaching people how to grow their own food; how to make fine, hand-crafted items for the home and for income and how to develop other skills necessary for a sustainable life,” said Butch Tindell, an instructor for The Ploughshare Institute for Sustainable Culture.

The goals of the course are to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the notion of sustainability that includes a detailed analysis of environmental, economic and social factors that impact the goal of developing a viable, sustainable culture and to provide participants with the knowledge of practical steps that are essential for living sustainably.

“We are excited to be returning to South Mississippi and partnering with The University of Southern Mississippi to offer education and training to people who are interested in learning to provide for themselves and experiencing the benefits of an agrarian way of life,” said Tindell.

Course topics include approaching current crises and the importance of living sustainably; growing your own food; development of a local food system; understanding the values of hand craftsmanship and discovering ways to restore a local-based economy. A 35-year-old sustainable community will also be examined.
