Betty Press, an adjunct instructor with the department of art and design at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been named recipient of the 2012 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award in Photography.
The award will be presented at the Mississippi Museum of Art June 9.
For more than 20 years, Betty Press has photographed in East and West Africa, including eight years as an international photojournalist when she lived in Nairobi, Kenya. Her work has been widely published and exhibited worldwide. In 2011 she published a book of her African photographs I Am Because We Are: African Wisdom in Image and Proverb in partnership with Books For Africa.
"We’re very proud of Betty, both for her accomplishments and in the way she represents our department and college by demonstrating the values she teaches her students," said John House, chairman of the department of art and design.
