The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will perform a Preview Concert on Friday, Aug. 20.

Football season is right around the corner at The University of Southern Mississippi and The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band is ready to bring game day spirit to Golden Eagle fans.

A Preview Concert will be presented on the Hattiesburg campus at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20 to give audiences a sneak peek at this season’s line-up. The free concert, to be held on the green space at the center of campus next to Cook Library, will include traditional Southern Miss favorites such as Southern Miss to the Top, Are You From Dixie and Pride Fanfare.  The band will also perform new halftime music, including Thanks for the Memories by theFallout Boysand Pokerface byLady Gaga. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

Southern Miss alumnus Gary Cook will serve as guest conductor. His musical accomplishments have served to make him a regional icon in the southeastern region of the United States. During his rewarding teaching career, Cook developed outstanding band programs in Mississippi at all levels of band instruction. He is revered across the state for the outstanding teaching and mentoring he provided for students throughout the course of his vocation.

The 300-plus member band will be led into the 2010–11 season by Mohamad Schuman, director of The Pride, and assisted by Jamie Standland.

“I’m excited about this year because there has been tremendous growth in The Pride. I only expect the organization to become even more amazing,” said Schuman.  “In addition, there is much excitement and publicity that will come to the university from the Macy’s presentation in November. I sense a great enthusiasm among the students this year.”

The Pride and Dixie Darlings are preparing to make their debut appearance in New York City as performers in the 84th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They are the first university band in the state of Mississippi selected for this prestigious honor. More than 47 million television viewers worldwide will watch Southern Miss students showcase their talent.

“Many supporters of The Pride have generously contributed to this project, but we remain short of our goal to make this dream a reality,” Schuman explained. “We still need support from Golden Eagles fans.”

Despite their busy schedule this year, The Pride will continue their tradition of presenting a pre-game concert for each home game, following Eagle Walk and one hour before kick-off.
