University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast employees who previously worked in the Administration Building on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach cut the ribbon to officially open the Administration Building Plaza Thursday, May 8. The Administration Building, which sustained major damage following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, was demolished allowing a new green space on campus. The space features the original footprint of the Administration Building’s foundation.

In addition to the ribbon cutting, employees retiring with decades of service to the university were honored with benches to be placed in plaza, as well as a gift of a sapling from the Friendship Oak. These employees are Shelia White, director of University Communications, with 36 years; Dr. Lynn Estes, associate vice president for administration and finance with 36 years; Dr. James Pat Smith, professor of history with 30 years; and Nadean Wallace, executive secretary for Student Affairs, 21 years.
