Students from the Department of Art and Design at The University of Southern Mississippi took top honors at the annual awards dinner hosted by the American Advertising Federation’s ADDY Awards Feb. 23.

The Federation’s Student ADDY Awards competition is a unique national awards program designed for college students. Work entered at the local level progresses to the regional, then national competitions.

Senior and Hattiesburg native Franz Gambe earned a Gold ADDY and Best of Show for her mixed media illustration. Gulfport senior Pamela Vittect received a Gold ADDY and the Judges’ Choice Award for her senior project, Oh My Bagel. Senior Rodney Pevey of Laurel took Silver in Packaging and Deonica Davis from Jackson also received Silver in Page/Illustration Layout.

The goal of the ADDY competition is to recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising.  The ADDY Awards is the advertising industry's largest and most representative competition, attracting more than 50,000 entries every year in local ADDY competition.

“These awards from a professional organization validate the quality work our students are producing,” said John House, professor in the Department of Art and Design. “We’re very proud of their accomplishments and how well this represents Southern Miss.”

Davis credited much of her success to her education at Southern Miss.

“It makes me so proud to represent my university,” said Davis.  “My work says a lot about what I have been taught in the Art and Design department. Accomplishments like the ADDYs confirm I am becoming a young professional that can stand on her own against the competition in the industry. I owe it all to the university, and especially the Art and Design family."

DeAnna Douglas, professor of Art and Design, was excited for the ADDY Awards recipients.  “The students represented Southern Miss well and we’re happy the department is visible to professionals on the coast.  I saw many former students receive awards as professionals.  We are all proud of these young designers who represent our program so well.”
