Main Content

A debate between The University of Southern Mississippi Forensics Society and the British National Debate Team Monday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, Ballroom 1. This event is free and open to the public.

The debate is sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies in the College of Arts and Letters. Each year, two university students from Great Britain are selected to represent the United Kingdom and tour the United States, debating collegiate teams at various universities across the country. This is the second year in a row that Southern Miss will be host to the British team.

“Hosting the British National Debate Team for the second year in a row is an honor. Last year's debate was a fun and exciting event, and this year's event promises to be even more of a crowd pleaser,” said Frankie Glennis-Watts, director of the Forensics Society.

Southern Miss will be the only school visited in Mississippi and one of the few universities in the southeastern United States. Members of the Southern Miss Debate society are excited about the opportunity to debate the British again this year.

Neshay Aqueel and Charlie Morris of the British National Debate Team will face Brandon K. Hersey and Michael B. Sims from the Southern Miss Forensics Society and will debate on the topic, “America Has Lost Its Moral Authority.”

This year’s debate brings new and interesting changes to the format of the event.

“Our students and the British team will flip a coin at the beginning to determine who will debate which side of the topic. Also, we are arranging for real time voting and results from the audience throughout, and at the end of, the debate. Bring your cell phone, and help us determine a winner,” said Glennis-Watts.
