Southern Miss Gulf Coast Honors Outstanding Students at 2014 Awards Day

In recognition of outstanding student achievement, The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus hosted the 2014 Awards Day Ceremony in the Hardy Hall ballroom on the university’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

During the ceremony, university faculty and administrators recognized the 2013-2014 outstanding students in each of the six academic colleges, the students selected for Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and the Wesley Foundation, which was named Outstanding Student Organization. Members of both the Southern Connection Leadership Team and Student Government Association were recognized for their year of service to the university.

The following students were recognized by their academic college as exceptional students:

  • College of Arts and Letters Outstanding Freshman – Zachary Clein of Ridgeland, entertainment industry (film)
  • College of Arts and Letters Outstanding Undergraduate Student – Ashley Hatley of Saucier, English and foreign languages (Spanish)
  • College of Arts and Letters Outstanding Graduate Student – Jensa Besse of Waveland, political science
  • College of Arts and Letters John E. Wallace Award in History – Kelroy Johns of Biloxi, history
  • College of Arts and Letters Susan M. Ross Communication Studies Award, Melanie McLeod of Long Beach, English licensure
  • College of Business Outstanding Accounting Student – Tamara Kinnard of Ocean Springs, accounting
  • College of Business Outstanding Business Administration Student – Christina Taft of Gautier, business administration
  • College of Business Outstanding Management Student – William Worsham of Ocean Springs, management
  • College of Business Outstanding Marketing Student – Danielle Slade of Pascagoula, marketing
  • College of Business Outstanding Tourism Student – Jennifer Hightower of Diamondhead, tourism (casino/resort management)
  • College of Business Outstanding Graduate Student – Sean Farrell of Ocean Springs, business administration
  • College of Education and Psychology Outstanding Child and Family Studies Student – Elizabeth Bolger of Ocean Springs, child and family studies
  • College of Education and Psychology Outstanding Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education Student – Lori Carpenter of Gulfport, elementary education
  • College of Education and Psychology Outstanding Psychology Student – Monica Hesler of Gulfport, psychology
  • College of Education and Psychology Outstanding Freshman – Cindy Juneau-Smith of Carrier, psychology
  • College of Education and Psychology Outstanding Graduate Student – Sherry Marie Holmes of Gautier, educational administration and supervision
  • College of Health Outstanding Community Health Sciences Student – Terri Jordan of Ocean Springs, community health sciences
  • College of Health Outstanding Sport Coaching Education Student – Kevin Felsher of Biloxi, sport coaching education
  • College of Health Outstanding Social Work Student – Cynthia Reeves of Gautier, social work
  • College of Health Outstanding Graduate Social Work Student – Beverly Ferguson of Pearlington, social work
  • College of Nursing Outstanding Junior – Haleigh Smith of Gulfport, nursing
  • College of Nursing Outstanding Senior – Thomas Oliver of Biloxi, nursing
  • College of Science and Technology Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Achievement – Erika Hosler of Gulfport, mathematics
  • College of Science and Technology Outstanding Graduate Academic Achievement – Sharon Cureton of Daphne, Ala., human capital development
