Gulf Coast College of Education and Psychology Awarded Inaugural Dean’s Cup
The College of Education and Psychology has been awarded the inaugural Dean’s Cup at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast. The award, presented by the Office of the Academic Dean at Southern Miss Gulf Coast, was based on overall student grade point average, student retention from the previous year to the current year and the college’s graduation rate.
“The Dean's Cup recognizes academic excellence among the colleges at Southern Miss Gulf Coast,” said Dr. Tom Lansford, academic dean. “This recognition serves to reward the college that has the highest achievements in the classroom and in retaining and graduating students.”
Dr. Ann Blackwell, dean of the College of Education and Psychology, said in commending faculty and staff for the recognition, “The Dean’s Cup testifies to the quality of advisement and instruction in the College of Education and Psychology on the Gulf Coast. It reflects the quality of academic programs in the college and the priority that faculty and staff place on serving our students."
Southern Miss Gulf Coast Summer Registration, Orientation May 23
The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host summer 2012 orientation for new undergraduate students at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 in the Fleming Education Center at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Registration and advisement for new and returning undergraduate and graduate students will be held from 2-6 p.m. May 23 in the Fleming Education Center.

Mong First at Southern Miss Gulf Coast to Receive Outstanding Instructor Award
In recognition of his dedicated service to persons with disabilities, Dr. Michael Mong, assistant professor of psychology at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has been honored by the university’s Office for Disability Accommodations as the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Instructor Award. Mong is the first faculty member to receive this award at Southern Miss Gulf Coast.
Mong was awarded a plaque and his name featured with previous recipients on display in the Office for Disability Accommodations. Nominated by a student, Mong’s selection was based on his work with students with disabilities and demonstrating efforts toward increasing students with disabilities’ involvement and success in academic and community life. He has been a member of the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Department of Psychology since 2008.
“Dr. Mong exemplifies the commitment of Southern Miss faculty and staff to support all students to be successful in their chosen careers,” said Dr. Ann Blackwell, dean of the College of Education and Psychology.
