Southern Miss Launches Website to Assist Student Veterans

Main Content

Armed Forces veterans seeking information about enrollment options or assistance with degree programs at The University of Southern Mississippi are encouraged to consult a new website offered by the Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families.

The Center’s mission is to establish sustainable conditions for a “military-friendly” education support program that provides veterans, service members (active duty and National Guard), dependents (family members) and survivors the opportunity to pursue a degree at Southern Miss.

Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond (U.S. Army, Ret.), special assistant to the President for Military & Veterans Student Affairs, serves as the Center’s director. Hammond’s military career spanned 32 years -- during which he received two awards of the Distinguished Service Medal, three awards of the Bronze Star Medal and two awards of the Combat Action Badge. He is a former Southern Miss quarterback and a graduate of the University’s ROTC program.

“We here at the University of Southern Mississippi know that our veterans and their families represent less than one percent of this nation’s population,” said Hammond. “We also know that it’s the most honorable service that you can perform for your country, and we’d be most honored if you could join us at this university. Because we care. We know how important you are, and we want to make a difference in your lives so you can go forth and make a big difference in the lives of so many others.”
