The Department of Medical Technology at The University of Southern Mississippi offers a rewarding career in a field that is experiencing strong employment growth.
Medical Technologists, also referred to as Medical Laboratory Scientists, are vital health care detectives who uncover and provide laboratory information from laboratory analyses that assist physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment.
Employment of medical laboratory workers is expected to grow faster than average by 11 percent by 2020, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The volume of laboratory tests continues to increase with both population growth and the development of new types of tests.
Hospitals are the major employer of clinical laboratory workers. However, employment is expected to grow rapidly within medical and diagnostic laboratories, physician’s offices and throughout the entire health care industry.
Medical technologists usually have a bachelor’s degree with a major in medical technology or one of the life sciences. The Department of Medical Technology at Southern Miss offers both a bachelor’s and master’s degree program in medical technology. It is the only program of its kind located in South Mississippi, and produces the highest number of graduates in the state for the past three years.
