The University of Southern Mississippi’sSouthern Opera and Musical Theatre Company will perform a spring opera, The Little Prince, Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center.
As part of its continuing educational outreach, the opera will also be on tour in Hattiesburg and Jackson, Miss., March 3-4. The tour is funded by the City of Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Trustmark Bank and in cooperation with Mississippi Opera’s co-opera program. The cast of The Little Prince includes music and theatre students from both Southern Miss and William Carey University.
Music director and producer Jennifer Hart, a Southern Miss doctoral conducting student, chose this British opera because of its modern musical style and the story’s ability to reach an audience of children and adults. The Little Prince is an inspiring tale of imagination and friendship. “We can all learn a lot from a child’s point of view,” said Hart offering a quote from the opera, “grownups are certainly quite extraordinary!”
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free to the public. Recital credit is available for Southern Miss students. For more details, contact Jennifer Hart at 601.270.3482.
